'Pathetic' - Exclusive: Top pundit reacts to Bloomberg's Newcastle takeover report
Noel Whelan has urged the Premier League to make a decision on the prospective Newcastle United takeover as reports of a rival bid intensify.
The former Leeds and Middlesbrough striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists it is “pathetic” officials have taken so long to come to a decision on whether to accept the Saudi-backed offer.
Bloomberg report that American tycoon Henry Mauriss has met Mike Ashley to discuss his rival bid and is in talks over hiring a PR adviser to help boost his prospects in case PCP Capital Partners’ offer is rejected by the Premier League.
With fresh speculation mounting, Whelan insists it is time a decision is made for the good of the club.
Whelan told Football Insider: “Look, I think everybody needs clarity on this and I think the Premier League need to step it up and get it finalised one way or the other.
“It’s not good for the club, it’s not good for the players, it’s not good for Steve Bruce – that’s for sure. He wants to know where his career lies, is it with Newcastle? Is the club going to be taken over?

“This has gone on for far too long, it really has, this could have been sorted out so much quicker, we’re still here talking about it and we’re no further down the line – that’s pathetic.”
Ashley has been in charge of the Magpies since 2007 and has endured a tumultuous time at St James’ Park.
Steve Bruce’s side currently sit 13th in the Premier League with two games left to play.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are closing in on a signing Danny Mills has described as “fabulous”.
