Paul Lambert slams Wolves 21-year-old, calls for more fight after first-team exile

Wolves boss Paul Lambert has criticised Dominc Iorfa’s lack of consistency and has revealed that he needs to fight if he wants to get back in the first team.

The 21-year-old has only played in two of Wolves’ last 10 matches in all competitions and Lambert has said that Conor Coady is his preferred choice in the right-back position.

Iorfa has failed to make the matchday squad since playing 90 minutes in the 3-1 loss to Norwich.

“Being a young player, like any young player aged 21, you sometimes get inconsistency,” Lambert said to the Birmingham Mail.

“That’s normal – you very rarely get young players playing 100 per cent every week.

“When I first came in he was doing fine for us, then at Stoke he was outstanding and then at Norwich, like a few of the lads he wasn’t quite on his game. Conor Coady’s been playing exceptionally well there, so that’s why I went back with him.

“Dom, like everyone else, has to fight to get in the team.”

Wolves are struggling for consistency themselves at the moment. In January they managed to overcome Premier League sides Stoke and Liverpool in the FA Cup, as well as a derby win over Aston Villa.

As the club looked to have turned around their fortunes, they suffered a late defeat to relegation-threatened Burton Albion last Saturday, which leaves them 18th in the Championship standings – just eight points clear of the drop zone.

Iorfa is a product of the Wolves youth academy and has made 90 first team appearances despite his young age. The defendfer also had a loan move to Shrewsbury in 2014 where he made seven appearances.

The right-back is a current England under-21 international and has picked up 12 caps for the Young Lions.
