Paul Merson aims double dig at Tottenham supporters
By Amir Mir
Paul Merson has aimed two digs at Tottenham by claiming their supporters “don’t have much expectations” and that they only have “one song”.
These comments come after Arsene Wenger told Arsenal supporters to be more like Spurs fans and “get behind” the team following a recent run of bad results for the Gunners.
Arsenal, who were beaten 3-1 at Premier League leaders Chelsea last weekend, closed their 12 point gap to nine points on Saturday when they beat Hull 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
By contrast, their north London rivals were beaten 2-0 against Liverpool at Anfield with two Sadio Mane goals being the difference between both sides.
This is what former Premier League player Merson had to say about Arsenal’s rivals when asked about what he thought Wenger meant by his comments.
“I thought he was thinking about being more pessimistic instead of optimistic,” Merson told the Fantasy Football Club on Sky Sports. “Don’t have so much expectations.
“I didn’t think he meant it in a way ‘oh they shouldn’t get behind the team as much’. In my opinion, they [Tottenham] only have one song and that’s the Southampton song.”
At this moment in time, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are one place ahead of their north London rivals in the table, leading by goal difference.
Both Arsenal and Tottenham drew 1-1 when they met in November with Harry Kane’s second half penalty cancelling out a Kevin Wimmer own goal.
The title-chasing duo will meet once again at White Hart Lane on April 29, with what will be the final north London derby at Spurs’ stadium as they are due to move out at the end of this season.
