Paul Merson can’t breathe after Alexander-Arnold stuns in Liverpool v Southampton
Paul Merson could not quite believe his eyes after a moment from Trent Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool beat Southampton on Saturday.
Arne Slot’s side were handed a first-half shock as a mix-up between Alisson and Virgil van Dijk allowed William Smallbone to open the scoring at Anfield on 8 March.
Darwin Nunez, who could have not been on the pitch for Liverpool, netted an equaliser just six minutes into the second half before Mohamed Salah scored twice from the penalty spot.
While the Reds were unable to keep a clean sheet, Alexander-Arnold was back to hit best, showing exactly why the likes of Real Madrid want to sign the Liverpool star.

Trent Alexander-Arnold wows with incredible pass at Anfield
Speaking live via Sky Sports News [8 March, 3:45pm], Merson said: “You’ve got to see… Alexander-Arnold plays a pass and you just can’t catch your breath. The ball comes out of the sky.
“He waits for it, and it’s about a foot off the floor when he volleys it to Salah. It’s just a phenomenal pass.”

Arne Slot cannot afford to lose Liverpool trio this summer
Football Insider verdict
As already mentioned Alexander-Arnold could make a switch to the Bernabeu this summer, but now van Dijk could also leave Liverpool, with Nunez and Luis Diaz also tipped for exits.
Slot could have a difficult summer ahead of him, much like Pep Guardiola at Man City with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, but the full focus will currently be on the team ending the campaign on a high note.

Liverpool are 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, have an EFL Cup final against Newcastle, and Champions League glory to fight for over the coming weeks.
Firstly, the Reds need to stay composed against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday 11 March, especially after escaping the Parc des Princes with an unlikely lead earlier this week.
That will also, hopefully, help draw bigger and better players to Anfield during the summer, and all the more important if Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk and Salah are to depart.
