By Dominic Toner

Paul Merson believes that experienced goalkeeper Petr Cech gives Arsenal a great chance in the title race.

The 34-year-old has played every Premier League game this season and kept four clean sheets.

Cech has won the English league on four occasions with Chelsea and is now playing an important role in Arsenal’s challenge with his leadership.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson claims that Manchester City and Liverpool will struggle in the title race because of their goalkeepers, but Arsenal and Chelsea are good picks because of their reliable number ones.

Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper Loris Karius has come under criticism for some costly mistakes in recent weeks, while Claudio Bravo is yet to show his best form since moving to Man City from Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Belgian international Thibaut Courtois is performing on a regular basis for Chelsea and Cech remains extremely consistent for the Gunners.

“This is the problem with Man City and Liverpool, they have goalkeepers who will lose them points, not win them points,” Merson told Sky Sports. “To win the Premier League you need goalkeepers who are going to win you points.

“You look at Chelsea and Arsenal and you would have to fancy them because of the goalkeepers.”

Cech is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Premier League history after playing a crucial role for Chelsea.

The shot stopper made a sensational move to the Emirates in 2015 in search of regular football and has been the first-choice option for Arsene Wenger since.

He is still performing on a regular basis despite his age and could be the difference in the closely-fought title race.

Arsenal have often been criticised of lacking leaders in the dressing room and they certainly have one in Cech.

Cech has kept 24 clean sheets in 57 appearances for the Gunners and is continuing to frustrate Premier League striker this season.
