Paul Merson predicts Everton v Hull

By Harvey Byrne

Paul Merson has tipped Everton to pick up a victory against Hull in the Premier League on Friday evening.

The Toffees are preparing to face the Tigers at the KCOM Stadium in a clash which sees seventh take on bottom.

Everton’s last match saw them finish 2-0 victors against league champions Leicester with goals from Kevin Mirallas and Romelu Lukaku.

By contrast, Mike Phelan’s side suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Premier League big guns Manchester City on Boxing Day.

Merson believes that the clubs are going to see the same fates on Friday, backing a 3-1 Toffees victory.

“I thought Hull were going alright against Man City until they gave away the penalty,” wrote Merson for the Sky Sports website. “They looked decent and there was nothing really in it. Everton got back to the way they should be playing against Leicester and I fancy Everton to win this. I don’t think Hull can live with Romelu Lukaku at the back.

“Hull have to win – there’s no point drawing. I wouldn’t say they’re down but they need to win this match to give themselves a chance really. They just can’t seem to win a game at the moment, so they’ll chase the game and that will play into Everton’s hands.”

The two Premier League sides are currently separated by a staggering 14 points in the English top flight.

A win for Everton would see them remain in seventh, but they could make up ground on the top six if results go their way.

Meanwhile, Hull could only move as high as 18th with a win, but it would give them a huge boost to their survival hopes and they could move to within a point of 17th placed Crystal Palace.

The two teams last met in the league in January 2015, which saw goals from Ahmed Elmohamady and Nikica Jelavic inspire a shock 2-0 win for the Tigers.
