Paul Merson has stated that he is going to “throw a bombshell out there” as he believes Chelsea will not win against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Sky Sports pundit Merson has backed the Premier League leaders to pick up a 1-1 draw against the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost their last three matches on home soil in all competitions as they look to get back to winning ways.
Liverpool were first beaten 1-0 against Southampton in the EFL Cup, they then lost 3-2 against Swansea in the Premier League, before losing 2-1 to Championship side Wolves in the FA Cup at the weekend.
By contrast, Antonio Conte’s Blues eased past Championship outfit Brentford by winning 4-0 to progress through to the next round.
Ahead of their mouth-watering tie, former Arsenal midfielder, Merson delivered his verdict on the game and the title race.
“I’m going to throw a bombshell out there – I cannot see Chelsea winning at Anfield,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column. “Forget about Liverpool’s recent struggles, this is going to be Chelsea’s toughest game of the season so far.
“Tuesday night, under the floodlights and a game Liverpool cannot afford to lose – things will be different.
“If Chelsea win, and then beat Arsenal, then the title race is virtually done and dusted. But I see plenty more twists and turns in the title race yet, starting with a draw here. That being said, Chelsea will be more than happy leaving Merseyside with a point.”
At this moment in time, Conte’s side lead their midweek opponents by ten points in the table and could open that gap further with a win.
The Merseyside club currently sit in fourth place, two points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester City as they could drop out of the top four with a defeat against the league leaders.
Klopp’s side will have star man Sadio Mane back from the Africa Cup of Nations as they will be hoping he can provide them with the attacking threat to win.
The Reds are the highest scorers in the league after 22 games, scoring 51 goals, with second-placed Arsenal one goal behind.
In other Liverpool news, this Reds attacking midfielder is on Leeds’ wanted list.
