Paul Merson predicts Liverpool v Everton, makes bold claim

By Amir Mir

Paul Merson has backed Liverpool to earn the bragging rights and beat Everton 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Anfield.

Sky Sports pundit Merson did make a bold claim by stating that the Toffees would have a chance of reaching the top four if they can win their next two matches, including this one.

Ronald Koeman’s side will travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Tuesday night, knowing six points from their next two games could help close the game on those above them.

Former Arsenal playmaker Merson, however, feels the injury to Everton’s backline will play its part in the fixture.

“Everton have a few injuries and I think they’re going to be hurt by them,” Merson told Sky Sports. “Half of their back four is out, and I know Lallana is missing, but I’m going for a Liverpool win here.

“Liverpool have to hope for the top four, that’s all they have left, and they really have to win this game. If Everton win this game, then go and beat Manchester United, you’ve got to fancy them to have a chance of reaching the top four. It’s a big if, though.”

The last time Everton secured a win at Anfield was in 1999, therefore, Koeman will have his work cut out at the weekend.

Right-back Seamus Coleman is out for the rest of the season after he suffered a horrific leg break whilst on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

Furthermore, it was confirmed that centre-back Funes Mori is also out of action which means the duo of Mason Holgate and Phil Jagielka could step in at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp has already guided his team to a 1-0 win against their rivals this term when Sadio Mane’s late strike in December helped secure all three points at Goodison Park.

The away team are six points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the table and two points behind fifth-placed Manchester United.
