Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Newcastle United will lose against Leicester at the King Power on Saturday.
The former Arsenal attacker has predicted that the Foxes will win 2-0, but claims that the Magpies are just one win away from securing their Premier League safety.
He believes that Stoke and Southampton will be unable to catch Newcastle if Rafa Benitez grinds out one more win, but he weirdly maintains that will be tough for the Tyneside club to do despite winning their last two games without conceding a goal.
“Newcastle’s win over Huddersfield was a massive result but I’ve got to go with Leicester, they’re a dangerous team,” he said on the Sky Sports website.
“I would say Newcastle are a win away from safety. I think 38 points is enough – you look at Southampton and Stoke, how are they going to get to 38?
“Newcastle only need one win, but that’s hard to get.”
After Leicester, Newcastle still have to play Arsenal, Everton, West Brom, Watford and Tottenham. They will no doubt win one of them and secure safety.
Football Insider verdict
Merson really has not taken into consideration Newcastle’s current good form and their remaining fixtures before issuing his puzzling verdict on the relegation scrap. Newcastle will earn a win against at least one of Leicester, Everton, West Brom and Watford, so there is really no worries for them. Without pressure on their shoulders, they should breeze to safety and start to think about a mid-table finish. Leicester’s form has been mixed as of late but they always seem to look solid at home. The most likely result in this contest would probably be a draw because the Magpies are defending well. They just need to sit deeper and nullify the threat of Jamie Vardy.
