Paul Merson predicts Tottenham v Sunderland, questions this key decision
By Amir Mir
Paul Merson has backed Tottenham to beat Sunderland 3-1 in their Premier League clash on Tuesday night at the Stadium of Light.
Sky Sports pundit Merson also questioned why the Black Cats have allowed Patrick van Aanholt to leave the club.
The left-back made a switch to Premier League rivals Crystal Palace on Monday and Merson clearly didn’t agree with the club’s decision.
Nonetheless, David Moyes side go into the midweek fixture looking to climb out of the bottom three as they currently sit rock bottom.
They face a Spurs side that is chasing the title and former Arsenal midfielder Merson can only see one winner on the night.

“What is going on at Sunderland? Patrick van Aanholt has been allowed to leave the club while Papy Djilobodji is out injured, leaving them short ahead of this game,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column.
“Yes, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo looks as though they’re heading to Wearside, but whether they will feature against Spurs remains to seen.
“It’s not the best preparation ahead of free-flowing Tottenham’s trip to the Stadium of Light. I can only see one winner.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s side travel to the north east having survived a scare during the fourth round of the FA Cup.
League Two Wycombe were beaten 4-3 by the London-based club, despite leading 3-2 with a minute left on the clock.
Now, he will be hoping his team can continue their winning run and close the nine-point gap on leaders Chelsea.
The title chasers currently sit in third place on 46 points from their 22 games, one point behind their north London rivals Arsenal and one point ahead of fourth-placed Liverpool.
The Reds are set to take on Antonio Conte’s men at Anfield on Tuesday which could see the Blues increase their lead at the top of the table.
