Paul Merson has predicted Tottenham to start life at Wembley with a draw as they prepare to host London rivals Chelsea.
The north London club will be hoping to add another win on the board against the Premier League champions who started the campaign with a demoralising 3-2 defeat against Burnley at Stamford Bridge.
The last time Spurs met the Blues however they suffered a 4-2 defeat in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley with two goals from Willian alongside efforts from Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic cancelling out strikes from both Harry Kane and Delli Alli.
Now, Merson has predicted that the two will be much more closer on Sunday with a 1-1 draw, stating that he believes both “will be more than happy” with the stalemate.
“Chelsea won’t lose here. I think both teams will be more than happy with a draw. You have to remember that the last thing Tottenham want to do is lose this game – their first at Wembley this season – and Chelsea can’t afford to lose a second game on the bounce,” told Merson to the Sky Sports website.
“Both teams will be nervous and I think it will be quite cagey.
“If not a draw I would probably go Chelsea. I was not impressed with Tottenham at Newcastle, I thought they were poor.”
A win for Tottenham on Sunday could see them take the top spot away from Manchester United depending on results elsewhere across the weekend.
Meanwhile, a draw could see them fall out of the top four at this early stage of the 2017-18 campaign and will bring many to question whether Wembley is good for the club.
Last season Spurs ended with an unbeaten home record at White Hart Lane and Mauricio Pochettino’s runners-up will be hoping to boast the same record this season.
