Paul Merson questions Tottenham ace, claims he cannot do this over five games
By Amir Mir
Paul Merson has claimed Tottenham ace Son Heung-Min cannot score five goals in five games.
Sky Sports pundit Merson was talking about the 24-year-old possibly replacing Harry Kane in the striker role after he injured his ankle during the win against Millwall last Sunday.
The outspoken pundit believes that Kane can score goals over a five-game period, but questioned whether Son can match his teammate in that department.
It is likely that Son will be named in the starting line-up that takes on Southampton on Sunday afternoon at White Hart Lane.
Former Arsenal playmaker Merson explained how he thinks the north London will cope without their star man and whether Son can fill his boots.
“I think they will get by with a couple of games,” Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports. “Can Son get five goals in five games? No. Can Harry Kane? All day long.
“One thing I would say is that last week was as good as it gets. I know people will say it was Millwall but we see Arsenal struggling against Lincoln and they come out and played some scintillating football.”
Versatile attacker Son has played a number of attacking roles for Mauricio Pochettino this season from a left winger to a centre-forward.
During this campaign, he has played 35 games in all competitions, scoring 14 goals, but he has started only 24 of those matches.
Son scored a hat-trick during the 6-0 win against Millwall in the FA Cup, with Vincent Janssen, another contender to start on Sunday, coming off the bench to score.
Pochettino will be hoping his team don’t lose any of their attacking threat because Kane has been their top scorer in the PL this season with 19 goals.
The north London club are unbeaten on home soil this term and they will be looking to maintain that record against a dangerous counter-attacking side.
In other Tottenham news, Dusan Tadic has claimed this Spurs outcast will eventually be brilliant for them.
