Paul Merson questions why Arsenal are not going for these six Tottenham players in angry rant

By Amir Mir

Paul Merson has questioned why Arsenal are not going for players such as Toby Alderweireld, Victor Wanyama, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies and Jan Vertonghen.

Sky Sports pundit Merson delivered an angry rant at Arsenal’s performance against their north London rivals last Sunday.

Arsene Wenger’s team were beaten 2-0 at White Hart Lane as the visitors put in an abject display throughout the match.

Harry Kane and Alli were the goalscorers on the day, but the scoreline could have been a lot more had the home team taken their early chances.

Merson was clearly disappointed with the effort Arsenal put in as he questioned why Wenger doesn’t go for players like these six Tottenham players.

“When I watched Leicester last year and you watched Kante,” Merson told ArsenalFanTV. “You were thinking, ‘where did they get him from?’

“When you look at this Tottenham team the players they brought, they have all been here, like Alderweireld, Wanyama, Dele Alli, Trippier, Ben Davies, Vertongnen, they have all played. Why aren’t we [Arsenal] going for these players? Why are we paying £30million for Xhaka.”

The result confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino’s team will finish above their rivals for the first time in 22 years.

Over the course of the season, players such as Alli and summer signing Wanyama have been key players for the club.

Kenya international Wanyama made a summer switch from Southampton and has since become an integral figure in the middle of the park.

By contrast, Xhaka, who arrived from Germany for a £30million fee, has struggled to adapt and cope with the fast pace of the Premier League.

This was apparent during the north London derby when Wanyama’s strength on the ball and ability to read the game quickly, allowed him to dominate the middle of the park.

In other Tottenham news, Hazard has given his verdict on whether Kyle Walker will still be at the club next season.
