Paul Merson would be ‘shocked’ if ‘unbelievable’ player didn’t start for Man United vs Brighton
A rare glimmer of positivity has emerged at Old Trafford as Manchester United prepare to take on Brighton in the Premier League.
Man United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool last weekend saw them clinch back-to-back victories under Ruben Amorim for the first time.
The Portuguese manager has endured a challenging time since moving to Manchester almost a year ago, and supporters will hope that his plan is finally coming together.
It was Harry Maguire’s late winner that stole the headlines at Anfield on Sunday, while his centre-back partner Matthijs de Ligt was outstanding against Liverpool.
However, heading into their clash with Brighton, Amorim could make some changes to his starting lineup.

Benjamin Sesko should start for Man United vs Brighton
Benjamin Sesko dropped to the bench against Liverpool, with Amorim deploying an interchangeable forward trio, which included Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha.
But Paul Merson believes Sesko will be restored to the starting lineup on Saturday, October 25 and thinks the type of game ‘really suits’ him.
“Amorim made a bold decision to bench Benjamin Sesko in the game against Liverpool and it paid off quite brilliantly for him,” Merson said in his Sportskeeda column.
“But I doubt he will do that again because unlike Liverpool, Brighton may decide to sit back deep in this game. So I’m not sure how effective Matheus Cunha can be in drawing defenders out of position like he did against Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
“I know Amorim really likes Mason Mount, but I’d be shocked if Sesko doesn’t play because this game really suits the big forward more. I don’t think Manchester United will win this game, going for a draw here.”
Standing at 6ft5, the ‘unbelievable’ Sesko is an aerial presence and someone who can hold his own against the Brighton defence, something he proved during Man United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Man United’s woeful record against Brighton
Man United have lost six of their last eight games against Brighton in all competitions, with the Seagulls becoming somewhat of a bogey team.
| Date | Fixture | W/D/L | Scoreline | Competition |
| 07 May 2022 | Brighton v Manchester United | L | 4-0 | Premier League |
| 07 Aug 2022 | Manchester United v Brighton | L | 1-2 | Premier League |
| 23 Apr 2023 | Brighton v Manchester United | W | 0-0 | FA Cup |
| 04 May 2023 | Brighton v Manchester United | L | 1-0 | Premier League |
| 16 Sep 2023 | Manchester United v Brighton | L | 1-3 | Premier League |
| 19 May 2024 | Brighton v Manchester United | W | 0-2 | Premier League |
| 24 Aug 2024 | Brighton v Manchester United | L | 2-1 | Premier League |
| 19 Jan 2025 | Manchester United v Brighton | L | 1-3 | Premier League |
As a result, Brighton can make history against Man United by becoming the first club to win four successive Premier League games at Old Trafford.
That being said, if the Red Devils have truly turned a corner under Amorim, breaking their recent curse in this fixture would go a long way to proving that.
