Paul Pogba cited in new Liverpool claim after player reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool have their own “Paul Pogba situation” after Mohamed Salah confirmed his plans to stay past the summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Reds will not want to lose the 29-year-old on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer.

Discussing his future on Wednesday (25 May) on Sky Sports News, Salah revealed “I am staying next season, for sure.”

As revealed by Football Insider this month (14 May), Liverpool are confident of a breakthrough in contract negotiations.

The winger is keen to commit his future to the Reds, with the club willing to offer a four-year deal worth over £80million in total.

Whelan admitted the Reds will be reluctant to lose such a high profile player for nothing in the way Manchester United look set to lose Pogba this summer.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Obviously, Salah will be coming to the end of his contract. I guess in some way or another it’s not ideal for Liverpool if they want to cash in on him.

“If he’s willing to sit out the length of his contract, you don’t want to lose that quality. It’s either sell him or you give him the improved contract that he wants.

“That’s where Liverpool are at. There are no other ways around this situation now. If he is staying, next season and coming up to January, you’ve got to have that knuckled down.

“You’ve got to have that contract in place for the player. You can’t afford to lose that quality, who commands the price tag that he would do, on a free. It’s like the Pogba situation.”
