Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Manchester United target Emiliano Martinez despite his “really poor” error for Aston Villa.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England number one said the 28-year-old has proved to be an “amazing” signing both on and off the field for Dean Smith’s side.
Martinez made a mess of an attempted clearance upfield in the first half, which led to Carlo Vinicius opening the scoring for Spurs in a 2-0 win.
The Argentine goalkeeper has starred for Dean Smith’s side this season, with 14 clean sheets in 28 Premier League appearances to date.
Football Insider revealed last week Man United are readying an offer for Martinez ahead of the summer transfer window after making him their top target.
Robinson insisted the club cannot afford to let the former Arsenal man leave.
“He has been an amazing signing,” he told Football Insider.
“From what I’m hearing, speaking to people about him, it is clear that he has had an impact in the dressing room as well as on the pitch so Villa cannot afford to let him go.
“Against Spurs, the clearance was really poor, it was big mistake but I cannot criticise Martinez because he has probably been Villa’s best player this season.
“Yes, it was an error but how many goals has he prevented for Villa this season? He has been nothing short of fantastic and I think it would be very harsh to point the finger at him for last night’s loss.”
