Noel Whelan has been left raving as Leeds United plot a raid to sign left-back Borna Barisic from Rangers.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Whites need some natural balance to their defence and claims the 27-year-old Ibrox star could be the answer.
As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday, Leeds have set their sights on signing the Croatia international in a bid to bolster their defensive options this summer.
Whelan believes Stuart Dallas could do with some added competition on the left-hand flank and suggests that Barisic would fit in well under Marcelo Bielsa.
Whelan told Football Insider: “I think what he’s trying to do is get that right balance. I think you have to have a left-footed player down that side.
“Stuart Dallas has done a fantastic job and there’s going to be competition from Stuart whether that be at right-back or left-back, we’re still going to need that strength in depth.
“I just think sometimes you need that balance down the left-hand side, with a good left foot, and his pedigree is fantastic – international, assists, everything you’re talking about with Marcelo Bielsa, who likes to play with wing-backs nice and high and that high energy going forward.
“Another good player that could be very useful for us.”
The former Osijek star was a standout performer for Steven Gerrard’s men last season and chipped in with 14 assists across all competitions.
As well as Dallas, Bielsa also has Ezgjan Alioski and Barry Douglas to call upon at left-back.
