Pedro Porro facing instant Tottenham axe – ‘this is the risk Spurs have taken’, says Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Tottenham need a “whole new defence” with players like Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic potentially “not good enough” to play in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Spurs need “three or four signings” in defensive areas.

New Tottenham boss Postecoglou almost exclusively played with a four-man defence at former club Celtic as they won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles.

Meanwhile, Spurs used a 3-5-2 system under ex-managers Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini – with a rare attempt at using Postecoglou’s favoured 4-3-3 resulting in an embarrassing 6-1 defeat at Newcastle earlier this year.

The Lilywhites have also tailored their transfer business to Conte’s preferred formation – with wing-backs Perisic and Porro among those to join in the last 12 months.

Porro was only officially signed earlier this month for a reported fee of £39million following a mixed loan spell at Spurs.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think this will be a concern for Postecoglou.

“This is the problem with buying big players without sorting out the future of your manager.

“For all we know, Ange will come in now and decide that Porro isn’t good enough as a right-back.

“Perisic, I’m sure is at an age where he’ll want to get rid of him.

Tottenham

“This is the risk Spurs have taken. Postecoglou is going to come in with his own ideas.

“He might look at it and say he needs a whole new defence. I feel like they need three or four signings at the back.”
