Pep Guardiola ‘raging’ at Ederson as Man City stunned by Real Madrid – ‘Goodness me’
Pep Guardiola will be furious with Ederson after Man City threw away a late lead against Real Madrid, Alan Shearer has said.
With both sides looking to make a bright start in the first-leg of their Champions League knockout play-off at the Etihad on Tuesday (11 February).
The hosts had started well, taking the lead through Erling Haaland after a long VAR check which was blamed for Man City losing and injured Jack Grealish, Kylian Mbappe levelled for Real Madrid on the hour-mark.
The hosts went back in front thanks to a Haaland penalty ten minutes from time, before a dramatic capitulation saw the game, and potentially tie, on its head.
Ederson under fire over Real Madrid comeback
Throughout the course of the game, goalkeeper Ederson had made a number of excellent saves to keep Guardiola‘s side in the match.
But with just four minutes of normal time remaining, a loose kick out from the Man City shot-stopper landed straight in the path of Jude Bellingham.
That then allowed Madrid to counter, and although Ederson was able to parry an initial shot from Vinicius Junior, the ball then fell straight to an unmarked Brahim Diaz who was able to comfortable tap into an empty net.
With that goal pulling Carlo Ancelotti’s side level, Shearer was convinced that Guardiola would be far from happy with his goalkeeper giving away their advantage ahead of the vital second-leg in the Spanish capital next week.
Speaking about the Man City ‘keeper’s role in that equaliser for Madrid on commentary of the match for Amazon Prime Sport, the former Newcastle striker said (9:47pm): “He’s made some really good saves this evening Ederson, he’s cost his team there. It’s a really poor kick giving possession back to Real Madrid.
“Just gets it all wrong and all of a sudden he puts his defenders under pressure. He stands up there gets a save but the rebound falls to Brahim Diaz and he’s not making a mistake from that.
“Goodness me, Pep must be raging. They work so hard to get into a really promising position then give it away with a basic error.”
Pep Guardiola facing another big Man City selection call
Football Insider Verdict
After that equaliser, things would get worse for Guardiola’s side as Jude Bellingham snatched a dramatic late winner for Madrid.
That gives the Spanish giants a massive advatage for when they host Man City in the decisive leg of the tie next week.

As was the case for the equaliser, the Brazilian was arguably culpable for the winner too after finding himself out of position.
Ederson has already come under pressure for his spot in the Man City side from Stefan Ortega this season, with both ‘keepers having spells in the starting XI.
While Ederson did make some big saves for Man City during the match, in big games such as this no team can afford for their goalkeeper to make such costly errors.
Consequently, Guardiola may now find himself facing questions about whether he will be forced to make another change between the posts going forward.
