'Perfect man for Rangers' - Jim Duffy raves about impending Gers appointment
Morton boss Jim Duffy believes Jimmy Nicholl is the “perfect man” to assist Graeme Murty as Rangers boss as the 61-year-old Northern Irishman prepares to complete his return to Ibrox.
Nicholl is expected to be named as Murty’s assistant in the next few days as the Gers bring in an experienced coach to work alongside Murty for the rest of the season.
Nicholl has huge experience – both as a player and coach – and his appointment has a certain similarity to when Rangers hired Archie Knox as assistant to Walter Smith.
Duffy believes Nicholl’s experience across club and international football “ticks loads of boxes” and will be a huge boost to rookie boss Murty.
“The news that Rangers plan to add Jimmy Nicholl to their coaching staff came a bit out of the blue,” Duffy said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“But once you thought about it, it quickly became clear that he’s the perfect man to assist Gers boss Graeme Murty.
“Jimmy brings a wealth of coaching and managing experience to the Ibrox backroom staff.
“From being a boss in his own right at Raith Rovers, Millwall and Cowdenbeath to working with international players as part of Michael O’Neill’s backroom team with Northern Ireland, he ticks loads of boxes.
“He’s been there and done it at all different levels.
“Jimmy is a top-class coach and he will make an impact at Ibrox with the way he can support Graeme on the training pitch.”
Nicholl played for the Gers between 1983 and 1989 with a stop at West Brom between two spells at Ibrox.
The former Rangers and Manchester United full-back was part of Michael O’Neill’s coaching team at the 2016 European Championship in France after leaving Scottish minnows Cowdenbeath following their relegation to League One.
Nicholl only joined current club Falkirk in October but a return to Ibrox has proven too much for the 73-times capped Northern Irish international to resist.
