Petrovic loan recall to replace Sanchez: ‘Serious’ Chelsea update

Chelsea will now have to “seriously consider” recalling Djordje Petrovic from loan thanks to the bad form of Robert Sanchez, according to Jason Cundy.

The Blues recently lost 3-1 to Man City at the Etihad Stadium on 25 January, with Sanchez at fault for Erling Haaland’s second-half goal.

The former Brighton man rushed outside of his box to challenge Haaland but got caught out, allowing the Norwegian to lob him and put City 2-1 up. This mistake marked Sanchez’s fifth error of the season that led to a goal, frustrating his teammates on the pitch.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Inside Chelsea show, Cundy proposed the idea of recalling Petrovic, who is currently on loan to Strasbourg after the Serb replaced Sanchez for part of last season at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “I don’t know the situation and I’d love to find out what the recall options are for Kepa and Petrovic. We’ve taken Trev [Chalobah] back. It’s not a good look. We bought Trev back.

“But that’s where we’re at right now… if there’s no recall, I would change it. If there is a recall, I would seriously consider it.”

Chelsea have plenty of goalkeeper options on the books to replace Robert Sanchez

The 27-year-old has been publicly backed by Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, but supporters have started to lose faith in the former Brighton shot-stopper.

Petrovic, who is currently on loan at Strasbourg, has enjoyed a solid season in Ligue 1, making 16 appearances, keeping three clean sheets, and conceding 25 goals.

Other options include Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is currently on loan at Bournemouth and has been performing well as their starting goalkeeper. Additionally, 22-year-old Filip Jorgensen is another potential choice.

With five mistakes leading to goals this season, Sanchez has become a target for opposing teams. With Chelsea’s form fluctuating, pressure is mounting on Maresca to make a decision.

The Blues will face West Ham on 3 February, where Graham Potter will take on his former side for the first time.
