Phil Foden could be axed after Man City latest - expert

Noel Whelan has suggested England boss Gareth Southgate could snub Phil Foden at this month’s World Cup despite his stellar form for Man City.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed he “can only see Raheem Sterling” getting the nod for a starting berth in Qatar.

Foden and Man City teammate Jack Grealish are options for Southgate on the left flank after the pair were called up to the 26-man squad on 10 November.

Foden has been in the form of his career at the Etihad Stadium this season – scoring eight goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Sterling has managed just five strikes since completing his summer move from Man City to Chelsea.

When asked about who is likely to play on the left-hand side of the England attack, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I can tell you that Southgate will go to his tried and trusted.

“Raheem Sterling has been the one he has gone to in the past. He’s the one who has the most experience in that front three.

“It would be hard to look past Sterling as the first choice on that left-hand side.

“But Gareth could see something completely different. That’s why you have a squad of 26.

“He’s got good squad depth and quality, and it’s going to be all about who can hit the ground running in a pretty unusual tournament.

“But for the first game against Iran, I can only see Sterling starting.”
