Phil Foden: Man City could be tempted into accepting exit offer as contract talks stall

Manchester City could be tempted to accept offers for Phil Foden in the summer if they fail to make progress in talks over a new contract.

The 25-year-old was not involved over the two-legged Champions League tie against Real Madrid, and was only handed a late cameo appearance in the Carabao Cup final.

Pep Guardiola has preferred to use the likes of Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo as his attacking options in recent weeks.

As a result, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man City could let Foden leave, but will only do so if the deal is right for them.

The academy product has been outstanding for them for a number of years, but given his contract situation, Man City could be convinced to sell.

Man City could accept new Phil Foden offer

Brown told Football Insider on 25 March that Foden is frustrated at Man City after his lack of involvement in the Carabao Cup final and could be tempted to leave.

City are believed to be open to his departure for the right price despite not rushing him out of the door, as they remain open to any eventuality.

The players’ stance has made their situation difficult, as he remains part of their long-term plans, but is not currently seen as a crucial player under Guardiola.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Man City were open to offers for Foden,” Brown told Football Insider.

“I don’t think they’re rushing to sell him by any means, they’ll want to keep him, but if somebody comes in with an offer, I think they could be tempted.

“A lot will depend on whether he wants to sign a new contract as well, because they’re not going to let him leave for free if it comes to that.

“If he’s not signing a new deal, they’ll want to make money from selling him and that would have to be this summer, even though it’s a situation they want to avoid.

“He’s still part of their plans even if he’s not playing as regularly in recent weeks.

“But Guardiola has preferred some of his other options recently, and Foden isn’t doing enough to show that he deserves a place in the starting XI.

“If the situation stays the way it is, I can see City being convinced to let him go.”

What is the latest on Foden’s Man City contract situation?

Doubts about the England international’s long-term future have come as his contract is set to expire in 2027, and he will have just one year left this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 15 March that Foden’s contract talks with Man City have stalled amid suggestions he could be lured away from the club this summer.

While the 25-year-old is not expected to actively push for a move away, there is a growing feeling he could be tempted to move on in search of playing time.

Foden is not expected to be short of admirers, with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich likely to be keen if there is any suggestion he will become available.

While City are determined not to let him run down his contract, and could hand him a new deal to secure his value, the sitaution remains up in the air.
