Phil Foden becomes record-breaker for Man City at Club World Cup
Phil Foden created history for Manchester City during their opening Club World Cup clash with Wydad Casablanca.
The Etihad Stadium club will be keen to utilise the new format of the tournament to win their first silverware of the year after enduring a rare trophy-less season.
Pep Guardiola’s men dropped well below their usual standards in the Premier League last term, limping over the line to Champions League qualification as opposed to winning a fifth-consecutive title.
Meanwhile, Foden endured a particularly disappointing campaign, scoring just seven goals in the top-flight last term after notching 19 in 2023/24.

Foden scores quickest goal in Club World Cup
After failing to meet expectations last season, the England international has already established his intentions of enjoying a strong Club World Cup campaign.
The 25-year-old put Man City in the lead against Wydad Casablanca inside two minutes on Wednesday, 18 June, marking the quickest goal of this summer’s tournament so far.
DAZN commentator Conor McNamara acknowledged that Foden had etched himself into Club World Cup history: “Phil Foden into the record books.”

Foden need to continue producing more of the same for Man City
Football Insider verdict
In response to last season’s disappointing exploits, Guardiola has already been busy in the transfer market, as Man City signed Rayan Cherki from Lyon.
Phil Foden stats | Premier League 2024/25 |
Appearances | 28 |
Goals | 7 |
Assists | 2 |
The France international enjoyed a remarkable individual campaign for the Ligue 1 side last term, notching 12 goals and 20 assists across all competitions last season.
But the 21-year-old’s arrival presents more competition for Foden in the long term, and the Man City academy product must remain wary and on top form.
Guardiola’s men already put Foden’s game time under potential threat when they signed former Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush during the winter transfer window.
Furthermore, it may be unlikely that Guardiola regularly fields all three of Marmoush, Foden, and Cherki in the Premier League next term, despite making that attacking selection call against Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday.
But if the England ace can continue producing the goods this summer and beyond, he will become a key player for the North West giants once again.
