Phil Foden’s sends message after England misery, Morgan Rogers reacts
Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers reacted to a message from Man City winger Phil Foden who had a night to forget in England’s 2-0 win over Albania.
Despite being named the Premier League player-of-the-year last season, Foden has endured a miserable campaign this time round.
City were expected to be in the running for a fifth league title in a row, but have failed to replicate their previous form under Pep Guardiola‘s stewardship.
The Sky Blues currently sit fifth in the Premier League, teetering on the verge of potentially missing out on Champions League football next season, should the underwhelming results continue.
Despite his lack of impact this campaign, Foden was still called up for Thomas Tuchel‘s first games in charge as England manager and started against Albania on Friday evening (21 March).
Phil Foden posts ‘winning’ message to England fans despite poor performance
England began the Tuchel era with a 2-0 win over Albania, thanks to goals from debutant Myles Lewis-Skelly and Harry Kane.
Whilst Dan Burn impressed for the Three Lions, Foden endured a tough night, unable to really have any influence on proceedings and was replaced by Rogers in the 74th minute.
Despite his performance, the City star posted a series of photos from the match on Instagram, captioned: “Off to a winning start with the lads”.
Rogers then liked the post, showing support for his former club teammate amidst wide-spread criticism.
Man City ready to sign ‘Swedish Lionel Messi’ and could move Phil Foden to new position
Football Insider Verdict
For much of the early stages of Foden’s career, there were questions about where to use him tactically.
The question of him playing was never in doubt, but the 24-year-old divided opinions on if he should be used out wide, or in behind a striker.
In recent seasons, Guardiola has taken to using him in both, but has primarily shifted Foden out wide on the left, making space for players like Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin de Bruyne to play through the middle.
However, with both the German and Belgian now looking to have reached the conclusion of their wonderful careers, Foden may well be used in a different role next season.
City are looking to sign Roony Bardghji on a free transfer this summer, Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider exclusively.
Dubbed the “Swedish Lionel Messi”, the Copenhagen winger would slot in comfortably out wide, allowing Foden to transition to Erling Haaland‘s main provider in the middle of the park.
