Philippe Clement: Keith Wyness drops instant Rangers sack verdict

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers boss Philippe Clement must be backed despite the club’s Champions League exit.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Belgian must be given the chance to “build a squad for the future”.

Rangers were dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday (13 August) after a 3-1 aggregate loss against Dynamo Kyiv.

The Ibrox club have already dropped points in the Scottish Premiership after drawing 0-0 against Hearts on the opening day.

Clement was handed a new contract earlier this month which runs until June 2028.

Rangers sacking Clement ‘can’t happen’, says Wyness

Wyness urged Rangers to stop “knee-jerking” after the sackings of Giovani van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale in recent years.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Philippe Clement has shown he can handle youth, he can build a squad.

“They’ve got to back him.

“Rangers need stability – that’s what it is.

“They can’t keep knee-jerking and sacking managers when things don’t go well.

“It seems like if they lose out to Celtic, fans want a new manager – it can’t happen.

“They’ve got to believe in Clement and try and build a squad for the future, rather than looking at the short term.”
