Philippe Clement ‘seriously considering quitting Rangers’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers boss Philippe Clement will “seriously consider” leaving to take the Belgium job if it is offered to him.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed he has been “hung out to dry” by the previous Ibrox board but the 50-year-old now holds “a few more cards in his hand than he had before Christmas”.

Clement was widely linked with the Belgium role at the end of 2024, with current incumbent Dominic Tedesco expected to be relieved of the position.

As per the Glasgow Times (13 January), former Anderlecht and Ghent boss Johan Boskamp has insisted “Clement’s name has certainly been discussed.”

He said: “The new manager has to be Belgian. There are enough good Belgian coaches. They just have to make clear choices.”

Clement’s Rangers side sit second in the Scottish Premiership – some 13 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic.

However, the Ibrox club are well placed to progress to a knockout tie in the Europa League.

Clement’s stock ‘rising’ at Rangers, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Clement now has been backed by the chief executive and the board, and quite rightly.

“His stock is probably rising.

“It would be so funny if he went and accepted the Belgian offer. He’ll be seriously considering it.

“Then again, from what I’ve seen, Stewart has spoken to him and he’s assured Clement that things will be changing.

“He has felt that he’s been hung out to dry by the previous board, and he was.

“There are still issues to resolve, but Clement now has a few more cards in his hand than he had before Christmas.”
