Philippe Clement told ‘tell Rangers fans the truth’ in brutal twist – pundit
Rangers boss Philippe Clement attempted to play down the importance of their 3-0 defeat to Celtic in his post-match press conference.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes the 50-year-old Belgian was wrong for using stats and their 6-0 win over Ross County to justify the result and ‘kid the fans’.
Goals from Japanese duo Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi and a 75th-minute finish from captain Callum McGregor have left Rangers five points behind their biggest rivals after just four games.
Pressure is building on Rangers boss Philippe Clement
Rangers are yet to win an Old Firm derby in five attempts under Clement, losing four, drawing one, and shipping 11 goals in the process.
With a 67 per cent win rate, Clement’s spell at Rangers is his most successful as a manager, leading the Glasgow club to a Scottish League Cup last season.
“Every game they’ve got to win, it’s the same with Celtic”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“There is a manner in which you get beat, with what happened last week and then all this nonsense about there not being that big of a gap, what a load of nonsense that is.
“Coming out with stats that don’t mean anything, Graeme Souness came out with that as well.
“Celtic had the game won so they just sat back at let them play it across the back, that’s where all the stats came from.
“If it was a boxing match it would have been stopped, the gap was that wide.
“And then Clement came out and said ‘Don’t forget we beat Ross County’ Really? Ross County got beat by Spartans FC the week before.
“I think it’s wrong that he’s coming out and doing all that.
“There is one thing you can’t do as Rangers or Celtic manager is kid the fans, I don’t know who the manager is trying to kid when he’s coming out with statistics, fans don’t want to hear that.
“The fans want to hear the truth, tell them the truth.

“Kris Boyd is the most biased guy I’ve ever known, but it hurt him when he told the truth and said not one of those Rangers players would get in the Celtic team.
“Rangers never won the league in the 90s but there was always a couple of two or three players that would have gone into the Celtic team, that’s not the case now.”
