Philippe Clement’s ‘Rangers reign could end soon’

Rangers boss Philippe Clement will have to start winning silverware or is unlikely to get another year at the club as fan pressure continues to build.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie admits the 50-year-old has been ‘up against it’ in his first year at the helm and that things will have to improve if he wants another year in Glasgow.

In the year since his appointment, Clement led Rangers to a Scottish League Cup victory at the end of last season but the gap with arch-rivals Celtic continues to widen.

The Belgian has failed to beat Celtic in his five attempts, losing four and drawing one including a 3-0 demolition earlier in the season.

Rangers are five points behind the unbeaten top two, Aberdeen and Celtic, but have a chance to close the gap when they face off on Saturday (October 19).

Clement’s side are unbeaten domestically since their Old Firm defeat and will face Kilmarnock on Sunday (October 20).

“I don’t think so if he doesn’t win anything, I think the fans will be wanting him out and it could end soon”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“But the fans have got to remember, he’s not getting any money, he’s brought it bargains.

“Some players that have come in are doing alright, Cerny was getting a bit of stick, he missed a couple of chances but he’s scored a couple of goals.

“They’re getting there. Souttar, now he’s in the Scotland team is doing well at the back so they’re getting a settled team and it’s always harder when playing against a settled team.

“He’s been chopping and changing and chopping and changing, that’s not good for a team.

“I just think he’s up against it because he keeps having to change the team but the last couple of games has been sort of our regular players and you know who’s starting, which is a good thing.”
