Phillips: 19-yr-old played key role in Poveda departure from Leeds
The rise of Crysencio Summerville allowed Leeds United to sanction a loan move for Ian Poveda this summer, according to Kevin Phillips.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said he does not expect the Whites to sign a replacement for Poveda, 21, before the transfer window closes.
Leeds United confirmed on Monday that the winger had joined Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan deal.
Poveda was a regular substitute last season and made 16 appearances across all competitions.
He has three years remaining on his contract at Elland Road.
When asked by Football Insider if Summerville’s development was a factor in Poveda’s exit, Phillips said: “I think that is probably the case.
“I cannot see Leeds making any more signings in this window. I think they will promote one of the youngsters to the first team to do the job Poveda did last season.
“Sending Poveda out on loan is just sensible. The kid might have gone to the manager and said he wants to play football week in, week out. It is probably a good decision on all fronts.
“There is now a chance for Summerville or someone else to come up from the Under-23s to get experience in and around the squad. I think that is more likely than somebody else coming in.”
Summerville, 19, is yet to make his senior debut for Leeds United despite impressing in the Under-23s.
The Dutch winger has contributed seven goals and seven assists in 16 appearances for Mark Jackson’s side.
