Phillips: Aston Villa tipped to open Archer talks ahead of January
Kevin Phillips is adamant Steven Gerrard has urged Aston Villa chiefs to tie Cameron Archer down to a new contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Claret and Blue claimed an extension for the 19-year-old “will be high on the priority list” of the new Villa manager.
Archer is out of contract at the end of the season.

Football Insider revealed on September 23rd that Villa are offering the striker an improved deal to remain at Villa Park.
The Midlands club are aware of interest from Premier League and European clubs in their young goal machine.
When asked by Football Insider if Archer’s future will be a concern of Gerrard’s, Phillips said: “I imagine there will be a conversation.
“He will know about Archer’s talents. He will want him tied down to a new contract as soon as possible.
“The talks will not be handled by Gerrard himself but he will tell the appropriate people to get it sorted.
“Archer is a brilliant, young, exciting player. Villa don’t want to lose him. He is a young player who could light up the Premier League in years to come.
“Getting him tied down will be high on the priority list.”

Archer has scored four goals in six senior appearances for Aston Villa.
He also has eight goals and three assists to his name in five appearances for the club’s Under-23s this season.
