Phillips backs Sunderland to re-sign Sanderson after source reveals plan to ‘pull out all the stops’

Kevin Phillips insists Sunderland will have to fight off a number of clubs if they are to re-sign Wolves sensation Dion Sanderson.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest in Sunderland’s pursuit of the immensely promising defender.

On 1st June, Football Insider revealed Sunderland are set to table an opening offer for Sanderson and will “pull out all the stops” to get him.

It is understood the Black Cats are aware of competition from Championship clubs as well as the possibility of a Premier League side entering the race.

Sanderson, 21, joined Sunderland on loan last summer and established himself as a key player at the start of 2021.

He played every minute of league football in a 14-game run between February and April before picking up a season-ending injury.

He proved to be a popular player among Black Cats fans and Phillips has his fingers crossed that Sanderson will return next season.

“I think he’s on the radar of a few other clubs, for sure,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“We all saw that he grew and grew into that position before the injury unfortunately set him back.

“He’s a young talent. The big thing for me is that he needs to play first team football.

“If Sunderland can secure his services on loan or on a permanent then that would be a great signing for them.

“They have seen what he can do so fingers crossed he opts to come back to the Stadium of Light.”

The defender made 26 League One appearances for Sunderland in total.

He scored one goal in a 2-0 win over Rochdale.
