Kevin Phillips has defended Tyler Roberts’ performance against Man City and claimed “you cannot judge him” given Leeds United were down to 10-men for most of the game.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker said Marcelo Bielsa’s side “were chasing shadows for long periods” of the match after Liam Cooper was sent off on the stroke of half-time.

Roberts started his eighth consecutive Premier League game on Saturday, as the Whites pulled off an unexpected 2-1 over Manchester City.

Leeds Live‘s Beren Cross revealed Bielsa was ‘annoyed’ with the Wales international in the first half as he struggled to contain City midfielder Fernandinho.

Phillips defended Roberts and backed him to return to his best for the visit of Liverpool next Monday.

“You cannot judge a player on a day like that,” he told Football Insider.

“Leeds were down to 10 men, away to Manchester City to a team that dominate possession when it’s 11 v 11. It was very difficult circumstances and they were chasing shadows for long periods so you cannot judge Roberts on that.

“You swipe that one under the carpet and I’m sure he’ll be ready to go again next week.

“Ultimately, the result masks over any individual errors in that game. I would not worry too much about that and I don’t think he will be either. I am sure Roberts will respond in the next match.”
