Kevin Phillips urges Aston Villa sign Ross Barkley over Ruben Loftus-Cheek as the club consider a loan move for one of the two Chelsea midfielders.
The former Claret and Blue, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, is a big fan of Barkley, 26, and claimed that he “would really enhance” the Villa squad.
Sky Sports claim that Villa boss Dean Smith wants to add another midfielder to his ranks before the 5 October transfer deadline.
It is reported that Barkley and Loftus-Cheek are both loan targets with the West Midlands club unable to pursue permanent deals due to the £85million already spent this summer.
The Premier League rules stipulate that only one player can be loaned from one club to another.
When asked by Football Insider who he would rather see at Villa Park this season, Phillips said: “I would rather them signing Barkley.
“A loan deal for Ross Barkley or Ruben Loftus-Cheek would really enhance their squad.
“I like Barkley. I know he has had a tough time at Chelsea but I have seen him have some great games. At one point he was a regular starter for England and you do not lose that talent overnight.
“I think a change of scenery would do him the world of good. It is tough when you go to Chelsea – a team full of superstars – you might get overawed. You can feel that you are not that big of a name. If he went to Villa Barkley would be right up there as one of the top names. I think he would thrive on that.
“I would rather see Barkley at Villa than Loftus-Cheek. He would thrive in that attacking midfield role, in a three or in a number 10 role. Barkley would bring quality to any squad.”
