Phillips ‘feels sorry’ for Sunderland ‘kid’ after ‘massive’ Broadhead news confirmed
Kevin Phillips “feels so sorry” for Nathan Broadhead after the Sunderland loanee was ruled out for three months.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said the development is “a massive blow” to Lee Johnson’s side.
Johnson confirmed (27 December) ahead of the trip to Doncaster Rovers that Broadhead would be sidelined for at least three months with a hamstring injury.
It comes after the striker limped off after 45 minutes of Sunderland’s 5-1 League Cup defeat at Arsenal on Tuesday.
Broadhead has impressed for the Black Cats since arriving on a season-long loan deal from Everton in August.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his reaction to the news, Phillips said: “It’s a massive blow.
“I feel so sorry for the kid. He fought his way back from injury and led the line brilliantly. He was performing so well and was chipping in with goals.
“The performance and goal at Arsenal was top-drawer. You could see the disappointment in his face when he had to walk off. He knew it was a bad one. He didn’t want to shake hands with anyone because he was completely gutted.
” It is a blow because whenever you lose a player who is bang in form, at this stage of the season, you’ll miss him. A hamstring can be really bad and sadly that’s the case.”

Broadhead has been one of Sunderland’s standout performers this term.
He has scored seven goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.
In other news, Sunderland have been backed by Phillips to sign ‘another O’Nien’ in January after confirmed news.
