Phillips hails ‘brilliant’ Sunderland after Dajaku signing

Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on the recruitment department at Sunderland following the signing of Leon Dajaku.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said the scouting “has been brilliant” this year, with the players signed looking “great” in the early stages of the season.

Sunderland confirmed the signing of Dajaku, 20, on deadline day on a season-long loan deal from Union Berlin.

The winger was handed the number seven shirt at the Stadium of Light.

Phillips believes the number seven shirt will give Dajaku “a huge” confidence boost.

“You are not at Bayern Munich unless you have got some serious ability,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“It will of course be a big jump coming to Sunderland. But, receiving the number seven shirt will have given the lad a big confidence boost. It will give him a huge lift.

“I am excited to see what he brings to the side. The scouting this season has been brilliant. The players they have brought in have done really well so far.

“I cannot judge the lad until I’ve seen him but I would certainly back the judgement of the recruitment department. The players that have come in have looked great. I’m excited to see more of them.”

Speaking to club media after his arrival, Dajaku said: “ I’ve seen some of the games and its crazy how many fans come in the first division, but this – having the fans push you – is what I like.

“It feels very good to sign for Sunderland and I’m very proud to be here.”
