Phillips hails 'great business' after Sunderland complete Pritchard signing

Kevin Phillips has hailed a smart piece of business after Sunderland announced the signing of Alex Pritchard.

The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says he has “no qualms” over the move.

On 9th July, Sunderland announced the capture of Pritchard on a two-year deal.

Pritchard, 28, was released by Huddersfield town this summer after three-and-a-half years at the club.

He made 19 appearances for the Terriers last season but played no part in the club’s last 15 league games.

Pritchard’s only previous experience of League One came with Swindon Town in 2013-14 as he made 36 appearances that season.

That year, he scored six goals and picked up 10 assists as the Robins finished eighth.

When asked if the acquisition of Pritchard is smart business, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “Yeah, it’s great business.

“Especially on a free transfer, he’s a good, quality player.

“Technically he’s very good, he could turn out to be a really good signing.

“It’s whether he can adapt to that life in League One straight away, sometimes it’s difficult.

“I have no qualms over his qualities, we’ve seen that over the years. That’s a good signing to be honest.”

Sunderland are gearing up for a fourth successive season in League One after losing in last season’s League One playoffs.

The Black Cats have already lost last season’s top scorer Charlie Wyke as he left on a free and joined Wigan.
