Phillips in awe of Sunderland after 'great' Huggins reveal

Kevin Phillips has claimed Sunderland have pulled off “a great bit of business” after details emerged of their deal to sign Niall Huggins.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner said he expects the 20-year-old to turn out to be “a really good signing” for the club.

Huggins joined Sunderland from Leeds last month and put pen to paper on a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

As revealed by Football Insider (14th September), the Premier League will not receive a transfer fee from the Black Cats for the right-back

Leeds have instead protected themselves by inserting a significant sell-on clause into the deal.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the deal, Phillips said: “It’s a great bit of business from Sunderland’s point of view.

“It’s sensible.

“He provides cover for Winchester in that position, who I must say is turning into a fantastic player. Winchester and Cirkin have done very well this season. The back four is looking solid.

“I haven’t seen an awful lot of Huggins but he is highly rated. On a free you would have to say it’s a no-brainer. It sounds like he is going to turn out to be a really good signing.

“Yes, there may be a sizeable sell on fee but most clubs insert that in deals these days. I’m sure when called upon Huggins will deliver.”
