Phillips instant reaction to Aston Villa sacking Smith as move for 40-year-old replacement lined up

Aston Villa will give under-fire manager Dean Smith until January to turn the club around.

That is the view of former Claret and Blue Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the mounting pressure on the 50-year-old.

Aston Villa announced today that Dean Smith had been relieved of his duties.

Villa slipped to their fifth successive Premier League defeat on Friday after a 1-0 loss at Southampton.

A Villa source told Football Insider (4th November) club chiefs will sound out John Terry for a potential return to Villa Park as manager.

Terry, 40, left his position as Smith’s assistant at the end of July.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Smith’s future, Phillips said: “I think Dean deserved until January at least.

“He recruited some very good players there but they need time. There is a lot of new faces there.

“Villa are going through a really tough time. A few results have gone against them and everyone is mentioning Jack Grealish. That was always going to be the case as soon as a rough patch came.

“Collectively they should not be getting beat 4-1 at home by West Ham. They should not be losing five games on the bounce. Dean knows that.

“The pressure was building, naturally, but he would have got my backing until January. I thought he would be given until then to turn things around.”
