Phillips: Johnson handed 'big boost' by Sunderland pre-Accrington after Hume news
Kevin Phillips has hailed Sunderland for agreeing a new deal with defender Denver Hume.
The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the club’s latest announcement.
On 9 September, Sunderland announced Hume has signed a new two-year deal with the club.
Hume’s previous deal expired at the end of the season but the club confirmed they had offered him new terms when announcing their retained list.
He is currently returning from injury and confirmed in his interview that he is back training on grass.
Hume, 23, has been at the club since he was eight years old and made 23 League One appearances last season.

Phillips insists this is yet another boost to Lee Johnson’s squad.
“It’s a sensible move,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“It’s also another big boost for the squad. They are in a great position at the moment and there is a good frame of mind.
“Everything is positive so to get him on board is another boost for the squad and the supporters.
“Johnson is building a good young squad there and I was impressed with them at the weekend.
“I’m looking forward to watching them again. It’s another great, positive move from Sunderland after a good start to the season.”
Sunderland are currently sat at the top of League One after winning four of their opening five games.
They take on second-placed Accrington Stanley on Saturday afternoon as they look to extend their lead at the top.
