Phillips lauds Pritchard after 'unbelievable' Sunderland decision

Alex Pritchard “is starting to show his class” at Sunderland, according to Kevin Phillips.

The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, expects the 28-year-old to “go on a little run” after his sublime goal against Shrewsbury Town.

Pritchard scored Sunderland’s only goal in a 1-1 draw at New Meadow on Tuesday.

It was the attacking midfielder’s first league start since the 1-0 loss to Brighton in mid-October.

A lot is expected of Pritchard, who joined the Black Cats on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town in August, given his wealth of Championship experience.

Phillips, who was at the 2-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday, confessed his surprise to see Pritchard only named on the bench.

“He is starting to show his class,” he told Football Insider.

“I couldn’t believe he wasn’t starting at the weekend. Lee Johnson had a settled side at the beginning of the season but that does not look to be the case now.

“There is no doubt about it, [Aiden] McGeady and Pritchard should be excelling in League One with the experience they have got. They have both played at a very good level.

“I’m not going to get carried away because Pritchard should be doing that every week. He has the ability to cut inside and curl it in the top corner.

“It is nice that he got his goal. I expect him to go on a little run now.”
