Phillips lauds Sunderland coaching staff after ‘huge’ Dajaku reveal

Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Sunderland manager Lee Johnson and his staff for their development of Leon Dajaku.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed it is “hugely important” to nurture the 20-year-old given his age and unfamiliarity with the country.

Dajaku made his sixth appearance of the season on Saturday as the Black Cats lost 1-0 at home to Charlton Athletic.

As quoted by the Sunderland Echo (21st October), the winger revealed he is loving his time on Wearside so far.

He added that he wants to be a trailblazer for young German talent taking ‘big opportunities’ in England.

Phillips is thrilled to hear Dajaku is settling in well.

“It is hugely important to help him off the field,” he told Football Insider.

“They know he has a lot of talent. It is just about nurturing him and trying to get the best out of him because he is a young kid. Lee Johnson and his staff have been very patient with him.

“They knew he wasn’t fully fit when he came. It looks now as if they’re bearing fruit from that now. Lee Johnson, the coaching staff and the physio deserve huge credit for getting him fit and firing.

“You have to applaud the players as well for making him feel comfortable and part of the squad.

“He’s already got a couple of goals which will be a massive relief for him. Let’s hope he continues to get better and better.”

In other news, Phillips has claimed Sunderland suffered from a major development against Charlton on Saturday.
