Kevin Phillips has tipped Sean McGurk to go straight into the Leeds United first team if he joins the club from Wigan this summer.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the forward area of the pitch is where Leeds will look to improve this summer.

This comes after transfer guru Alan Nixon claimed he’s ‘not heard different’ when asked on Twitter if McGurk will end up at Leeds.

In January, Nixon claimed Wigan had turned down an offer from Leeds though McGurk will be able to move to Elland Road for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

Phillips mooted the idea that McGurk is only being brought into Leeds so he can be sold on for a profit, as has become more common for some clubs.

“The business they do on the Under 23s side, they do it for a few reasons, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“One, to try and get them in and comfortable so they can be in and around the first team but a lot of clubs now bring them in with a view to moving them on for a profit.

“You’d like to think him coming to Leeds will get him an opportunity, we all know that area of the pitch is somewhere Leeds will look at this summer.

“Maybe they’ll have one in the 23s and have him that could maybe do a job in the first team.”

Joe Gelhardt, 18 and formerly of Wigan, has featured on the bench for Leeds in several Premier League games this season as a potential striker option.

He may yet be handed a Premier League debut as the season winds down, especially if Patrick Bamford picks up an injury.
