Phillips: Newcastle are ‘shambles’ and ‘bizarre’ news is the last thing Bruce needs
Kevin Phillips has labelled the latest statement out of Newcastle as “bizarre” and called the club a “shambles”.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the Magpies’ recent release.
On 3 September, Newcastle released a statement defending their lack of spending this summer.
The club reiterated its commitment to a sustainable business model “built on the principle that we will spend what we have.”
The statement was ripped apart by furious Newcastle fans on social media with some of the anger coming from the fact that no one had put their name on the release.
On Friday (10 September), Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope shared what Bruce said when asked about Newcastle’s statement last week.
Bruce said, “What can I do about it?”, when asked if he was happy with the situation.
Phillips insists the statement is the last thing Bruce needed after Newcastle’s poor start to the season.
“It’s another bizarre thing that has happened at Newcastle over the last 10 years,” Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“I’m just talking in general, not even with a red and white head on. I want the best for all football clubs.
“Why come out and say anything at all? The supporters know why things have happened, they aren’t daft.
“Ashley doesn’t want to spend because he wants to sell the club, why would he spend?
“Why does that statement need to come out with no name on it? It’s a bizarre situation.

“That’s the last thing Bruce needs that considering the start they have had. It’s just another saga they don’t need.
“From the outside looking in it’s a shambles.”
