Phillips predicts Sunderland to offer McGeady new deal after contract twist
Sunderland will offer Aiden McGeady a new contract after his eye-catching performance against Lincoln City.
That is the view of Stadium of Light legend Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about whether the 35-year-old will still be at the club next season.
According to The Scottish Sun, McGeady waived his right to a one-year extension on his £19,000-a-week contract ahead of Saturday’s League One play-off semi-final and will instead become a free agent this summer.
The winger was sensational in a 2-1 victory against Lincoln City on Saturday but it was ultimately in vein with the Black Cats knocked out 3-2 on aggregate.
The Sun on Sunday (16/05, p. 59) claim Peterborough United are keen on signing the former Republic of Ireland international following their promotion to the Championship.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of McGeady’s future on Wearside, Phillips said: “I would say wages will be a decisive factor.

“They will want to try and keep McGeady at the club so I think they’ll make him an offer.
“They need to keep their best players if they want to go one better next season. He is one of the best in the division so it’s no surprise that there is Championship clubs sniffing around him.
“He showed his quality against yesterday. Whenever he gets the ball you’re on the edge of your seat. Whether it is a cross, a shot, he always does something.
“His future will boil down to finances and the player himself. Does he think now is the time to move on?”
