Phillips: Raphinha has had ‘head turned’ at Leeds United after transfer update

Kevin Phillips has suggested Raphinha may have had his “head turned” by all the transfer interest at Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland striker admitted the 25-year-old’s performances have “dipped” in recent weeks.

As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano on Monday (14 February), Barcelona have joined the race to sign Raphinha and have discussed a potential move with the Brazilian’s agent Deco.

As detailed by Football Insider as early as February 2021, Liverpool are also keeping close tabs on the winger.

Phillips admitted Raphinha may have been distracted by all the speculation surrounding him.

Asked if he thought Raphinha’s underwhelming performances are a result of simple bad form or distraction over a potential move, Phillips told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I would say a bit of both, if I was a betting man.

“He is an exciting talent, we all know that and he has been linked with big clubs. Some players do have their heads turned.

“Also, those types of players do have dips in form. Unfortunately, when you play for Leeds and the pressure’s on, people are going to highlight it. You’re one of their best players.

“It’s unfortunate, I think it’s just coincided with the timing. The timing hasn’t been great. Even if Leeds were flying I think he’d have had a bit of a dip.

“It happens, but it is highlighted more because of the situation they are in.”

Raphinha has scored nine goals and contributed three assists in 27 Premier League games this term.

He chalked up his first assist since January in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Norwich City.
