Phillips reveals verdict on Wyke quitting Sunderland 'Mackems do not want to hear'
A number of Championship clubs will be sniffing around Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke ahead of the summer, according to Kevin Phillips.
However, the Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said he “would be amazed” if the 28-year-old turned down a new contract on Wearside and left in the next transfer window.
Wyke is out of contract at the end of the season, having put pen to paper on a three-year deal upon his arrival from Bradford City in 2018.
Football League World reported last week that Middlesbrough are keeping tabs on the centre-forward’s situation ahead of the summer.
No-one has scored more goals than Wyke in League One this season, with his 33 appearances in the division yielding 22 goals and three assists.
When asked for his assessment of Wyke’s future, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs:

“As much as the Mackems do not want to hear it, a few Championship clubs will be sniffing around.
“It is just natural for a striker that has scored as many goals as he has. There will always be interest in a striker that has scored that amount of goals. I can speak from experience because that first season, in which I scored 35 goals, there was interest in myself.
“I would be amazed if Charlie even thought about leaving Sunderland if they got into the Championship.
“The supporters should be back in the Stadium of Light and at no other club will you be playing in front of 35,000 fans. I certainly would not be looking to move on.
“The club will be trying to tie him down. Get him on board, it is as simple as that.
“I would be shocked if Wyke wanted to leave.”
