Phillips salutes 'great bit of business' at Sunderland after 'amazing' Hume reveal

Kevin Phillips is over the moon after Sunderland announced the signing of Trai Hume from Linfield.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said the 19-year-old could be “a great bit of business” given his age and the club’s need for a right-back.

The Black Cats confirmed the signing of the teenage defender from Linfield last Tuesday.

Hume put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year contract on Wearside.

As quoted by the Chronicle (9 January), Lee Johnson heaped praise on the “amazing” youngster who “can probably surprise us for the now.”

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his reaction to the new arrival, Phillips said: “It was a priority signing.

“Right-back is a specialist position and he has plenty of experience in that sense. He has also played in the qualifying round of the Champions League which is great experience for a young player, even if it is with Linfield.

“I cannot confess I know a lot about him but it sounds promising. It could turn out to be a great bit of business. He’s a good age and he would not have cost a fortune. He’ll have something about him, I’m sure.

“It is a position they’ve needed to strengthen in. Hopefully we see him soon.”

Speaking to club media after his arrival, Hume said: “It feels amazing to be here at this massive club. I can’t wait to get out there in front of the fans with my new team-mates.

“I came to the Sheffield Wednesday match and it was absolutely bouncing – I loved every second of it.”
