Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez despite his two blunders against West Ham.
The former Claret and Blue, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, refused to criticise the 28-year-old but admitted that “he will be disappointed” in his performance on Wednesday night.
Martinez was at fault for two of West Ham’s three goals at Villa Park as the visitors recorded a 3-1 victory to strengthen their hopes of finishing in the European spots.
The £17million summer signing from Arsenal has been one of Dean Smith’s side standout performers this season.
Phillips gave his backing to the Spanish shot-stopper and claimed he has been “outstanding” since his arrival.
“He will not be please with himself but I will not jump on the bandwagon and criticise him,” he told Football Insider.
“I was shocked because he has been outstanding this season.
“But unfortunately, when you make a mistake as a goalkeeper it is highlighted – no matter how well you’ve done.
“He has been brilliant since he arrived and nights like that happen.
“I think he will be disappointed when he watches it back. He will get over it and he will pull off many more good saves between now and the end of the season.”
Speaking on Martinez after the loss, Dean Smith said: “Very disappointing goals but I can’t moan too much about our goalkeeper the way he has done this season.
“He has 10 clean sheets already. He is having an excellent season so far and one mistake certainly won’t disappoint the Villa fans and myself with how he has done this season.”
