Phillips slams chiefs after Sky update on Tottenham ‘farce’

Kevin Phillips has slammed “the powers that be” after Tottenham duo Giovanni Lo Celso and Cristian Romero were accosted by Brazilian health authorities.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on this “comical” situation.

Sky Sports report (7th September), Spurs are to fine the duo for joining up with the Argentina squad without permission.

The duo reportedly travelled to South America for games against Venezuela and Brazil against the club’s wishes.

They were on the pitch when Brazilian health authorities marched onto the pitch and postponed the game.

Phillips has taken aim at the people who allowed the game to go ahead in the first place.

“I just don’t get it,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“With everything that’s happened in the last 12 months so and we’ve just come through the Euros with no hitches.

“It’s a farce. The powers that be need to look at themselves. How they can let the game kick-off then walk onto the pitch.

“Again, it’s a farce. At times I haven’t understood VAR but you can get your head around that.

“This is something else, it’s comical. These players missed the game at the weekend and we don’t know what’s happening.

“The powers that be need to sort this out.”

Nuno Espirito Santo

The duo missed this weekend’s clash against Crystal Palace.

It is unknown exactly when they will return to the UK after their eventful international break.
